Most homeowners don’t replace their AC system because they planned to. They replace it because they waited too long — and a breakdown in the middle of August made the decision for them, on someone else’s timeline, often at a higher cost.

The better question isn’t whether your system will eventually need replacing. It’s whether this summer is the right time to make that move on your terms.

Here’s the honest framework we use when a Hampton Roads homeowner asks us this question.

The Signs That Tell You It's Time To Replace Your AC System: The Conversation Worth Having

Your system is 12–15 years old. In Hampton Roads, systems run hard from May through October and deal with salt air, humidity, and heat that accelerates wear. A system that might last 18–20 years in a dry climate often shows its age closer to 12–15 here. If your system is in that range, every repair is a different calculation — you’re not just fixing a problem, you’re extending equipment that’s already near the end of its run.

You’ve repaired it more than once in the last two summers. One repair is normal. Two is a pattern. Three is a system telling you something. The 50% rule is a useful benchmark: if the cost of a repair exceeds 50% of what a new system would cost, replacement almost always makes more financial sense.

Your energy bills have climbed without explanation. Aging systems lose efficiency before they fail completely. If your bills have increased noticeably over the last two or three summers without a change in how you use your home, the system is working harder than it should to deliver the same result.

Your home has rooms that never feel right. A properly functioning system conditions the whole home evenly. If the upstairs is always too warm or one bedroom never cools down, that’s often a system that’s lost capacity — not just a quirk of the house.

The Signs That Tell You to Wait

Not every aging system needs to be replaced. Repair is often the right call when:

  • The system is under 10–12 years old

  • Repairs have been infrequent and minor

  • The home cools evenly and comfortably

  • Energy bills have been stable

  • The repair cost is well below 50% of replacement cost

We’ll always tell you when repair is the smarter move. That’s been our approach since 1994 and it’s not changing.

Why Summer — Before Labor Day — Is Actually Good Timing

Most homeowners assume fall is the best time to replace an AC system. And for scheduling flexibility, that’s often true. But replacing before the summer ends has its own advantages.

You eliminate the risk of a breakdown during the hottest remaining weeks. You have your new system — with its improved efficiency and full manufacturer’s warranty — running before fall maintenance season begins.

And right now, through Labor Day, Comfort Technology is offering one of the strongest installation packages of the year.

The Summer Comfort Event includes up to $1,000 off new system installation, 0% financing, and your first year of Comfort Club membership free — a $300 value that includes seasonal tune-ups and priority service. All three, one package, available through September 1, 2026.

If the signs are pointing toward replacement, this is a good window to act. If they’re not — we’ll tell you that too.
