Hampton Roads home thermostat before fall heating season

Hampton Roads winters are mild by most standards — but that mildness can create a false sense of security. When temperatures do drop, your heating system needs to be ready. And the best time to find out if it is isn’t the first cold night of October.

Here’s a practical HVAC winter prep checklist for Hampton Roads homeowners, plus a plain-language explanation of the most common question we get this time of year.

Your HVAC Winter Prep Checklist for Hampton Roads

Test the heat now. Switch your thermostat to heat, set it a few degrees above the current room temperature, and wait five minutes. Warm air should come out of your vents. If it doesn’t, or if the system runs without producing warmth, you’ve found something worth addressing before the season gets busy.

Replace your filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow and forces your system to work harder — in heating mode just as much as cooling. If you haven’t changed it since summer, now is a good time. In Hampton Roads homes with pets or heavy cooking, monthly checks are worth building into your routine.

Check your vents and returns. Walk through the house and make sure supply vents are open and not blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Closed or blocked vents disrupt the air balance your system depends on.

Clear the outdoor unit. If you have a heat pump, the outdoor unit is active year-round — it’s how the system pulls heat from outside air in winter. Make sure it has at least two feet of clearance and isn’t buried under debris from summer or early fall.

Check your thermostat batteries. It sounds simple, but a dead thermostat battery is one of the most common reasons a heating system appears to fail. Replace batteries before the season if you haven’t recently.

What a Professional Tune-Up Covers

Some things can’t be checked without professional equipment. A fall heating tune-up typically covers:

Heat exchanger inspection. Cracks in a heat exchanger are a safety issue — they can allow carbon monoxide to enter the living space. This inspection is one of the most important parts of any fall heating service and can’t be done by a homeowner.

Burner and ignition system check. These components sit dormant all summer. A technician verifies they ignite reliably and burn cleanly before cold weather arrives.

Gas connections and pressure. Checked for safety and efficiency.

Flue and venting inspection. Blockages can develop over summer from debris or pest activity.

Refrigerant levels (heat pump systems). Low refrigerant affects heating efficiency just as much as cooling.

Electrical connections and capacitors. Components that showed wear during summer cooling season may need attention before heating season begins.

Furnace vs. Heat Pump — What Do You Actually Have?

Before you schedule service, it helps to know what type of system you’re working with.

A gas furnace uses combustion to generate heat. It’s paired with a separate central air conditioner for cooling. The outdoor unit you see runs only in summer — the furnace is the indoor unit, typically in a closet, utility room, or attic.

A heat pump handles both heating and cooling using the same equipment. The outdoor unit runs year-round — in summer it removes heat from inside your home, in winter it pulls heat from outside air and moves it in. Heat pumps are highly efficient in mild climates and are well-suited for Hampton Roads, where temperatures rarely stay below freezing for extended periods.

If you’re not sure which system you have, there are two quick ways to tell: check whether you have a gas line connected to your indoor unit (furnace) or whether the outdoor unit runs in winter (heat pump). If you’re still unsure, give us a call — we’ll take a look.

When to Call

If your heating test fails, your system is making a new noise, or you haven’t had a professional tune-up in the last 12 months — September and early October are the right time to call. Technician availability is better now than it will be once temperatures drop and heating calls pick up.

Comfort Technology is booking fall tune-up appointments now. We serve Hampton, Newport News, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Williamsburg, and the surrounding Peninsula and Hampton Roads area.
