5 Signs It's Time to Replace Your AC Before Summer Gets Worse

If your air conditioner has been giving you trouble this summer — running constantly, struggling to keep up, costing more than it used to — you're probably asking a question a lot of Hampton Roads homeowners ask once the heat really settles in.

There's no single answer that fits every situation, but there are clear signals. Here are five signs that tell you the conversation is worth having before August arrives.

1. System is More Than 12–15 Years Old It Might Be Time to Replace Your AC

Most central air conditioning systems are designed to last 15 to 20 years with regular maintenance.

But in Hampton Roads — where systems run hard from May through October and deal with salt air, humidity, and heat — the realistic lifespan tends to run closer to 12 to 15 years.

If your system is in that range or beyond it, every repair becomes a different calculation. You're not just fixing a problem — you're extending the life of equipment that's already near the end of its run.

At some point, the repairs cost more than the replacement would have.

2. You've Repaired It More Than Once in the Last Two Years

One repair is normal. Two repairs in two summers is a pattern. Three is a system telling you something.

The 50% rule is a useful benchmark: if the cost of a repair is more than 50% of what a new system would cost, replacement almost always makes more financial sense.

But even below that threshold, repeated repairs signal that components are failing — and once one goes, others tend to follow.

A repair that costs $400 this summer and $600 next summer and $800 the summer after that isn't a maintenance cost. It's a down payment on a replacement you're going to make eventually anyway.

3. Your Energy Bills Have Climbed Without Explanation

Air conditioners lose efficiency as they age.

A system that was rated at a certain efficiency level when it was installed may be operating significantly below that level today — even if it's technically still working.

If your energy bills have increased noticeably over the last two or three summers without a corresponding change in how you use your home, the system is working harder than it should to deliver the same result.

Newer systems are substantially more efficient than equipment from ten or fifteen years ago, and the energy savings alone can offset a significant portion of the replacement cost over time.

4. Your Home Has Rooms That Never Feel Right

If you've lived with a room that's always too warm in summer for years, it's easy to assume that's just how the house is.

Sometimes it is. But more often, it's a system that's lost the capacity to condition the whole home evenly.

As equipment ages and efficiency drops, the system struggles to maintain consistent temperatures throughout the house. The upstairs gets warm. One bedroom never cools down. The thermostat reads 72 but the back of the house feels like 78.

A properly sized, properly functioning new system conditions the whole home — not just the rooms near the air handler.

5. Your System Uses R-22 Refrigerant

If your air conditioner was installed before 2010, there's a good chance it runs on R-22 refrigerant, which was phased out of production due to environmental regulations.

R-22 is no longer manufactured in the US, which means the supply is limited and the price has climbed significantly.

If your older system needs a refrigerant recharge, the cost can be substantial — and you're putting that money into equipment that's already aging.

This is one of the clearest cases where replacement makes more sense than repair.
