4 Things to Check When Your Furnace Won't Turn On

Few winter problems feel more urgent than a furnace that won’t start. Before assuming the worst—or scheduling emergency repairs—there are a few simple things you can safely check.

In many cases, the issue is minor. Below are four common reasons a furnace won’t turn on and what homeowners can inspect before calling for service.

1. Check the Thermostat Settings

It sounds simple, but thermostat settings are one of the most common causes of furnace issues.

Make sure:

  • The thermostat is set to Heat, not Cool or Off

  • The temperature is set higher than the current room temperature

  • The fan setting is on Auto (not On)

If you switch the fan to “On” and the blower runs but there’s no heat, the issue may involve ignition or burners rather than power.

Also check for:

  • Low or dead batteries (if applicable)

  • A blank or unresponsive display

Thermostat issues are often quick and inexpensive to fix.

2. Inspect the Circuit Breaker and Power Switch

Furnaces require significant electrical power. A tripped breaker can stop the system completely.

Check:

  • Your home’s main electrical panel for a tripped breaker

  • The furnace’s dedicated shutoff switch (often located nearby or mounted on the unit)

If a breaker trips repeatedly, do not continue resetting it. That indicates an underlying electrical problem that needs professional attention.

3. Look at the Condensate Drain and Safety Switch

High-efficiency furnaces produce condensation during operation. That moisture drains into a pan and out through a drain line.

If the drain line clogs:

  • The drain pan can fill with water

  • A safety float switch may shut the system off to prevent water damage

Check for:

  • Visible water in the drain pan

  • Obvious clogs or debris in the drain line

If you suspect a blockage, it’s best to have a technician clear it properly to avoid further system damage.

4. Confirm Fuel Supply

If your furnace runs on gas or oil, it won’t start without fuel.

For gas furnaces:

  • Confirm the gas shutoff valve is open

  • Check if other gas appliances in your home are working

For oil furnaces:

  • Verify the oil tank isn’t empty

  • Check the tank’s gauge or consult your fuel provider

If fuel supply appears normal but the furnace still won’t ignite, the issue may involve ignition components or safety controls.
