Experiencing a problem with your home AC is never a fun experience. It always seems to happen right on the hottest day of the year and now suddenly you don't have a cool home to escape to. To prevent this from happening, you'll want to identify issues with your AC unit as early as possible. With that in mind, here are five signs to look for that will tell you that it's time for maintenance or repairs.

1. Strange Noises

The first thing to pay attention to is the noise your AC unit makes. When operating normally, your AC should create a quiet buzz that you tune out over time. If you hear anything else throughout your home, or when you're standing by the unit outside, this is a sign of trouble. Listen for grinding or rattling sounds, and if you hear them, call in an AC repair team sooner rather than later.

2. Power Issues

Next, if you're experiencing power issues with your AC unit, you should get these fixed right away. Power issues include either when your AC won't turn on at all or when it shuts off before cooling your home. This problem could be the result of a failing unit, which you'll want to replace before it breaks down entirely. You could also have a problem with your home's circuit panel, which is best examined by a trained professional, to prevent injury or damage to your home.

3. Warm Temperatures

The entire purpose of your AC unit is to cool down your home. If you're running your AC and not achieving this result, then you have a problem. Warm air coming out of your vents could be the result of a bad thermostat, a failing compressor or a blockage within the system.

Continuing to run the system while only getting warm air will just result in higher energy costs without achieving a cooler home. A professional repair and maintenance team will be able to diagnose the problem and apply the appropriate solution so that you can go back to having cool air coming from the air vents.

4. High Humidity

When the warmer weather arrives outside it typically brings humidity along with it. You'll go outside and the air will feel sticky due to the amount of moisture in the air, creating an unpleasant experience. A properly working AC unit will prevent this same problem from happening inside your home. However, if your AC is experiencing some issues, you'll find the air in your home sticky or hard to breathe. On top of that, too much humidity inside your home can even cause damage, meaning before long you're dealing with more than just an AC issue.

The solution to this issue is either typically re-calibrating your AC unit or installing a dehumidifier. A trusted AC maintenance team will be able to analyze your home's situation and recommend the best course of action.

5. Higher Energy Costs

Finally, you should take a look at your energy bills. If you're spending more to cool your home than usual, this could be a sign that your AC unit is working harder than it needs to. AC maintenance allows your unit to operate at maximum efficiency so that you don't have to use as much energy. While there could be other factors at play that are driving up your energy costs, an AC unit that needs maintenance is a common one.
